Nursing

Nurses trained outside Ireland (registration)

If you are a Nurse trained outside the EU or EEA, in order to be eligible to apply for registration with the NMBI, you must:

  • Hold a current registration/licence to practice without restriction in the country where you qualified or have been practising;
  • If you have completed your nursing education more than 5 years before the application date, you must have practiced for at least 12 months;
  • You will need to meet the English proficiency requirements. Learn more about this here.
  • Have completed extra courses leading to registration as a first level nurse. See here.

After you send an Overseas Registration Application Request Form, NMBI will process the assessment fee and check for English language competence. Note that the assessment fee is non-refundable. Eligible applicants will receive an email with a link enabling them to access the documents to apply for registration. So you will have access to the Pack information you need to know electronically and will not have to wait for it to arrive by post. Then the NMBI will carry out a full education assessment on your application for registration. After the assessment process, the NMBI will inform you the assessment outcome. There are 4 possible outcomes.

If you are eligible for registration and meet all of NMBI’s application requirements, you will have to pay the registration fee. After that your registration will be complete within 7 to 10 working days and you will receive a decision letter that confirms that you are now registered with NMBI.
