Becoming a Healthcare Assistant in Ireland

Where to Begin:

The most important aspect of becoming a HCA is completing a FETAC/ QQI Level 5 Qualification. This qualification can be completed in either Healthcare Support, Pre Nursing Studies, Care of the Older Person and so many more depending on what you plan to specialise in.

During this qualification, you will need to complete 8 modules comprising 120 credits.

Other requirements to become a HCA in Ireland:

  • Be eligible to work in Ireland
  • Have a minimum of 3 months’ recent experience
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English
  • Hold a full vaccination record including Hep B, MMR, TB and Varicella

How much it costs:

Where you can work:

There are many setting which have a demand for Healthcare Assistants, these settings include:

  • Hospitals
  • Clinics
  • Nursing Homes
  • The home of a client
  • GP Surgeries

Hourly rates for HCA can vary but you could expect typically between €11- €15 per hour.
