If you're considering working as a pharmacist in Great Britain, you must first register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). The GPhC conducts a recognition process to evaluate how pharmacy qualifications and registrations from other countries align with their requirements. This process varies depending on where you received your qualification. The following post details how to apply for recognition if you received your qualification within the European Economic Area (EEA).
In order to apply for recognition of your EEA pharmacist qualification, you will need to carefully read the guidance provided by the GPhC and identify the information and supporting documents you will need to provide.
Alongside your application, you will be required to submit several documents, including:
All copies of documents provided must be certified by a:
Any documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a literal translation. The translation must be carried out by a professional translator (you can contact your embassy for a list of translators).
The following documents to be sent to the GPhC directly, from the relevant pharmacy organisations in your EEA country:
The GPhC needs to be able to verify your identity and your qualifications to assess your application. This is done by confirming your identity using your birth certificate, and matching your name across all your supporting documents. In cases where there are issues with your birth cert, or the name on your documents does not match, you will be required to submit a statutory declaration form.
If it is not your first language, you will need to provide the GPhC with evidence of your high level of English across all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. Your evidence of English language skills should be provided with your application for recognition of qualifications.
After submitting all required documents, the GPhC will take some time to review them. They may contact you for additional information if your application is missing any supporting documents.
Once your application form, ID, qualifications and supporting documents have been checked by the GPhC, you will be notified of the outcome of your application to have your EEA qualification recognised.
If your application for recognition of your EEA qualification is successful, the GPhC will send you the application form you need to complete to apply to join the pharmacists' register.
In order to register as a pharmacist, you will need to have a ‘myGPhC’ account to complete your application. If you don’t yet have an account, you can create one here. Registration has an application fee of £106, and a registration fee of £257, which covers the first 12 months of your registration.
You are expected to apply to register as a pharmacist within three months of being notified that your application for recognition of your EEA qualification was successful.
