Registration as a pharmacist in Northern Ireland - Update

The UK left the European Union on January 31 and is now in a transition period until December 31, 2020.
During the transition period, there will be no change in the way EU / EEA-EFTA applicants apply for registration with the PSNI.

After the transition period, there may or may not be changes, which will depend on the outcome of the negotiations throughout the transition period.

If you are a pharmacist and would like to work as a pharmacist in Northern Ireland, you must register with the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland.

You cannot practice in Northern Ireland as a pharmacist without being registered with PSNI.

For pharmacists who have graduated from an EU country, there are two possible routes for registration:

Route A – Standard Route (qualify for automatic recognition or acquired rights)
Route B – Comparative Assessment Route

You can ask for automatic recognition of your diploma (route A) if you hold a qualification in pharmacy from a member state of the EEA according to the Directive 2005/36/EC.

For registration with the PSNI you must provide the documents required, such as:

• Diploma/ Degree certificate 
• License to Practise
• Passport/ Proof of nationality
• Birth and Marriage certificates
• Recent photograph
• Details of employment as a pharmacist since first registering
• Evidence of registration and good standing and Compliance with Directives
