Recommendation Letter

A letter of recommendation, or reference letter, is a written letter describing the skills and work experience of a candidate relevant to the position for which the person is applying.

When a candidate applies for a job, he (or she) will need to send one or more reference letters to support his (or her) application. Typically, these letters are written by current or former employers, but can also be written by supervisors, co-workers, and other business professionals who have firsthand knowledge of the candidate's skills.

Recommendation letter format

The letter of recommendation should include the following topics:

  • A brief introduction, candidate's experience, personal history and a final statement;
  • The name, position and contact of the employer, supervisor, co-workers or other professional and relationship with the applicant;
  • An overview of candidate skills, personal traits, and job-related traits;
  • A statement about why the recommended candidate would be a good option for the new job.
