Personal Public Service number (Ireland)

To work and live in Ireland you will need to get a Personal Public Service number (PPSN).

The PPSN is a unique reference number that helps you access social welfare benefits, public services, etc.

PPS numbers are given by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.

To get a PPS number you will need to provide the following documents:

  • Proof of ID
  • Proof of address
  • And you will need to explain and show evidence of why you need a PPS number.

A PPS number consists in 7 numbers followed by either one or two letters.

You can use your PPS number for:

  • All social welfare services
  • The Free Travel Pass
  • Public health services
  • Housing grants
  • Driving licences
  • Others matters
