The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) plays a crucial role as the statutory body responsible for regulating nurses and midwives in Ireland. Established under the Nurses and Midwives Act 2011, and operating independently under the Health and Social Care Professionals Council (CORU), the NMBI's primary role is to protect the public by ensuring that nurses and midwives provide safe, competent, and ethical care. They set standards for education, practice, and professional conduct, register qualified nurses and midwives, and handle complaints or disciplinary matters related to their members.
The NMBI released their statement of strategy for the next two years last month. The strategy reflects the changing healthcare landscape and the need for nurses and midwives to be equipped with the knowledge, skills and resources to provide safe, high-quality care. It sets out a clear vision and objectives to advance the nursing and midwifery professions in Ireland and enhance patient care.
They aim to continue to carry out their key functions as outlined above and in addition, they have identified a range of actions, projects and activities that they will undertake over the next 2 years. They have grouped the strategic priorities under three ‘P’s – which form the core of what they do – protecting, promoting and progressing.
At the core of their strategy, the NMBI is committed to safeguarding the public and upholding the integrity of the professions they regulate. By rigorously regulating nurses and midwives in Ireland, they ensure that these healthcare professionals deliver safe and competent care. The NMBI recognises the importance of supporting their own people, including staff, board members, and committee members, to maintain the highest standards of practice and professionalism.
Recognising the significance of attracting and retaining talent within the nursing and midwifery professions, the NMBI aims to actively promote these professions across Ireland. Through targeted initiatives, they strive to create awareness and showcase the rewarding opportunities available within nursing and midwifery. By highlighting the value and impact of these professions, the NMBI aims to encourage individuals to consider and pursue careers in nursing and midwifery.
The NMBI recognises the challenges that registrants may face in meeting the required standards. As part of their strategy, they commit to leveraging their insights and learnings to help nurses and midwives overcome these barriers. By providing support and guidance, the NMBI ensures that registrants have the necessary tools and resources to continuously enhance their practice. Additionally, the NMBI aims to facilitate the evolution of the nursing and midwifery professions and professionals in Ireland, embracing innovation and advancement.
