Healthcare System in Ireland

Nurses, doctors or pharmacists from the European Union tend to accept more and more job offers in Ireland. Understandably, there are many questions and depending on the state of one's health, children or just prevention, knowing how the health system works in Ireland is fundamental.

All people ordinarily resident in Ireland and certain visitors to Ireland are entitled to a range of public health services at reduced cost. You are ordinarily resident if you have lived in Ireland for at least one year or intend to live here for at least one year. You can prove this by providing the HSE with proof of purchase or rental of the property, including proof that the property is the person's main residence, a letter or statement from a financial institution or current bills.

Any person, regardless of nationality, who is accepted by the HSE as being ordinarily resident in Ireland is entitled to either full eligibility (Category 1, i.e. medical card holders) or limited eligibility (Category 2) for health services.

You can apply online for a medical card on mymedicalcard.ie. This is the quickest method of getting the card. If you have any questions before you send your application, you can phone Lo-call 0818 22 44 78, contact your Local Health Office, or email [email protected].

Because of both the fees and the possibility of long waiting times for public healthcare services, some 40% of Irish residents take out a private insurance policy - the highest percentage in Europe.

Private insurance is more expensive than public healthcare, but it does give you a guarantee that you’ll be able to quickly access the best level of care if the worst happens.

Benefits of private medical cover in Ireland:

  • Significantly shorter waiting times
  • Peace of mind in the face of unknown future disasters
  • You can budget your healthcare spending in advance
  • Privacy

Private health Insurance companies:

Private insurance is regulated by the Health Insurance Authority (HIA). Its website has a very helpful comparison tool, which is the place to go to find the right option for you - whether that’s full insurance or a cash plan.
