Nursing is a demanding profession both physically and emotionally but also very rewarding. In Ireland, there are five undergraduate studies you can take if you want to become a nurse.
They are:
All programs take four years to complete, except for the Integrated Child and General qualification, which takes four and a half years to complete.
General nurses can work in a variety of settings and play a key role in healthcare teams and in the community. They can work in medical wards, operating theatres, intensive care units, emergency departments, general practices, nursing homes, etc. They provide care for sick patients according to their needs and also play an important role in their education and health promotion.
RCN (Registered Children’s Nurses) are nurses who provide care and assistance for children of all ages in a variety of settings. They work with children up to the age of 18 and they work in partnership with the children's families to provide the best possible care and individualized treatment to them.
Registered Nurses in Intellectual Disability (RNIDs) work with people of all ages and with intellectual disabilities. They provide holistic care to help people overcome physical and intellectual limitations so they can enjoy the best possible quality of life. They also work in a wide range of settings, including community facilities, residential homes, nursing homes, schools, etc.
Mental health nurses work with people with mental health difficulties to support them and promote their personal growth, development and recovery. Mental health nurses work alongside other mental healthcare professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and social workers in a variety of settings. After they graduate, they can specialize in several areas within mental health nursing, such as Cognitive Therapy, Adolescent Mental Health Nursing, Eating Disorders, Old Age Mental Health Nursing among other specializations.
Midwives are nurses who support women during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care. They have a fundamental role in health promotion and education of women and their families with the arrival of the new newborn. They work in partnership with obstetricians and other health professionals to offer the best care to pregnant women, especially in the most complex cases. They can also work in different environments such as maternity clinics, hospitals, clinics and patient’s homes.
Following completion of their Bachelor Degree in Nursing, nurses must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) in order to be able to practice as a nurse in Ireland.
