What is a Healthcare Assistant?

Healthcare assistants (HCAs) play a crucial role in the Irish healthcare system, providing support and care to patients in various healthcare settings. As a HCA, your duties typically include:

  • Assisting with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
  • Monitoring patients' vital signs, like blood pressure and pulse.
  • Helping patients with mobility and transfers.
  • Providing emotional support and companionship.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
  • Documenting patient information and reporting any changes in their condition to healthcare professionals.

How to Become a Healthcare Assistant in Ireland:

The most important aspect of becoming a HCA is completing a FETAC/ QQI Level 5 Qualification. This qualification can be completed in either Healthcare Support, Pre Nursing Studies, Care of the Older Person and so many more depending on what you plan to specialise in.

During this qualification, you will need to complete 8 modules comprising 120 credits.

Other requirements to become a HCA in Ireland:

  • Be eligible to work in Ireland
  • Have a minimum of 3 months’ recent experience
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English
  • Hold a full vaccination record including Hep B, MMR, TB and Varicella

How much it costs:

Prices for HCA Qualifications can vary between €150- €350.

  • GP Surgeries

HCA Salary:

The salary of healthcare assistants in Ireland can vary depending on factors such as experience, location, and the specific healthcare facility. Hourly rates are typically between €11- €15 per hour.
